Toward the end of the first act, the studio staff who are *not*
part of the broadcasting cast and crew begin to find out that
there are people going crazy out there, and they invade the
soundproofed engineer's booth and demand that they DO SOMETHING.
It's almost time for a break between acts anyway, so they make an
announcement there that this is a recreation of H. G. Wells's
novel, et cetera.

But of course, most of the people being followed are no longer
listening to the radio because they're on the run.  There is one
guy in a bar who refuses to believe the Martians have landed, and
stays in the bar when everyone else flees.  At the half-time
announcement, he shouts "I told ya it was a radio show!" but
they're not there to listen.

There's also a very nice sequence with a lot of rich people in
San Francisco holding a party.  The maid and butler know it's a
fictional program, but the rest of them Won't Listen and run for
God knows where, carrying valuable paintings and things.  The
butler sits down to listen to the rest of the show, laughing.
