Yep, and there are LOTS of manufacturers of off the shelf modules to
do just that.

You obviously have no clue what is out there in terms of components
to build embedded systems.

I would suppose your method would be a custom designed controller
running the total system cost so high no one could afford the
end product.

Nope, just goes to show how little you know about real world
programming in general and process control in particular.

An 8 bit controller gives you one part in 256 resolution, more than
fine enough for a toilet controller.

No, you don't as you have never thought about such a thing, much
less implemented such a thing.

And has existed for decades.

A toilet could be automated with a Basic Stamp, which is one of the
oldest and simplest microcontrollers out there.
