That would most likely come from failing to align on a 4KB boundary, as most of the drives over 2TB use 4k physical sectors instead of 512 bytes. When a write doesn't align, the 4k write is translated by the drives slow firmware into two physical reads, application of the changes, and then two physical writes. Reading is not affected, but writing is drastically slower. The worst I've seen are with the drives that have a 512 byte logical sector size, and a 4kb physical size. Those are also the drives where this would be needed since the mbr will still be based on 512 byte sectors instead of 4KB ones.
