I'll also recommend Mageia https://www.mageia.org/en/downloads/

For a new user, I'd recommend either the Gnome Live dvd, or the kde
live dvd, so they can try it out, without actually installing it on
there hard drive.

Just be aware that some monitors (ones that either do not return edid
info, or return incorrect edid info) may end up with an unsupported
video mode, requiring editing the kernel options at startup, to add
xdriver=vesa
