Velocity is a vector and speed is its size.

Both velocity and speed can be mean values
and speed can be both one or two way mean.

In 1D scenarios, velocity is often treated
in a scalar way as a both-signs velocity vector component.

I intentionally do not say average,
as an average is usually implied to be an arithmetic mean,
while a mean speed is a harmonic mean.

I.e. the mean speed v of 2 speeds  v1 and v2
along the same distance in opposite directions
is not ( v1 + v2 ) / 2,
but 2 / ( 1/v1 + 1/v2 )
