the official tar ball on the gnu site is gforth-0.7.3.tar.gz which I'm 
already using.

the other tar mentioned in this group by Jos (thank you) points to:
http://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/forth/gforth/Snapshots/current/gforth.tar.xz
which compiles fine now on MacOS and Linux.
