Inline functions are usually a better choice than functional macros when
you can use them. Not every piece of code /can/ use inline functions -
people still write to the C89 standard.

Compilers are free to optimise code in many interesting ways.

Modern compilers will usually automatically inline static functions that
are only ever used once, since that is almost always a win for code
speed (finding reasons why it might not be a win is left as an exercise
for the reader). Inlining other static functions may or may not help -
good compilers have increasingly more sophisticated algorithms to
determine this. With higher optimisation settings, compilers are
usually better at figuring out this sort of thing than programmers, and
the "inline" hint is mostly ignored.
