For a completely different solution, you could look at the Python BSD 
program.  It has been a while since I used it myself, but its immediate 
advantages for you over the C code here are:

1. It is in Python, not C, so making a small change is easy.  It is far 
easier to make a small change in a Python program when you don't know 
Python, than a small change in a C program when you don't know C.

2. It already supports inverting the DTR line.
