There's a difference between "entertainment" and something in which you'd want to invest *effort*. I'm rewatching Firefly (last night, tonight and tomorrow night) for the fourth time... culminating in the yet another rewatching of Serenity. But, the Firefly episodes are fluff -- even compared to Serenity (which is a more self-consistent story). This is also apparent in the scripts, acting, etc. -- you get the distinct impression that Firefly doesn't take itself seriously; a feeling that you *don't* get with Serenity. [Read David Wong's works (John & Suits) to see that sort of tongue-in-cheek in full force -- and he's invested a LOT more in the worlds he's created, therein!] By contrast, Stross's "Halting State" series is much more of an "engineered" story/world. You don't have spaceships and *horses* as the two means of transportation! :> (I.e., _Cowboys and Aliens_ was more self-consistent than Firefly)
