Of course! It mimics the mechanical sound you are trying to electronically
reproduce.

The "enclosure" can make a big difference in the "quality" of the sound.
If you go this route, take some time to experiment with that aspect of
the "design". You can also modify the striker/striking surface to
change the character of the sound (experiment with soft rubber/plastic
"bumpers")

Note that you needn't use a knocker, /per se/. Any of the solenoids from
a pintable can be adapted -- though the knocker has the advantage of a
readymade "package" (and doesn't have other "ancillary" sounds/jangles
associated with its mechanism).

The solenoid from any of the "bells" would also be an easy modification.

Look in your local yellow pages for "Amusement Devices" or "Vending
(Machines)". Chances are, you have at least one storefront that addresses
this market (even in towns of a few thousand population!).

If they don't have the item "stocked", ask for the names of any of the
"Operators"/"Route men" in town (these are the guys who service the
jukebox/vending/arcade machines located in the bars, bowling alleys,
prisons, "private clubs" (BPOE, IPC, PPC, etc.) in town -- each might
have only one or two "machines" and hence not have a "staff" to address
their needs (unlike a full-fledged "arcade").

You might get lucky and find a guy who will sell you one "off his truck"
while standing in the parking lot outside the bowling alley, etc.

The advantage they have is that not a lot can go wrong that can't
be verified with an ohmeter prior to sale!

Good luck!
