Yes. I think I'm right in saying that you think that because you like to 
rely on the compiler to pick up any reference to an uninitialised 
object. Now, it is true that gcc is quite good at this, but some 
compilers are easily fooled:

#include <stdio.h>

static int proc(int *v)
{
   int rc = 0;
   if(v != NULL)
   {
     if(*v > 42)
     {
       rc = 1;
     }
   }
   return rc;
}

int main(void)
{
   int var;
   int rc = proc(&var);
   printf("%d, %d\n", rc, var);
   return 0;
}

gcc warns on this behaviour (but the warning goes away if *v is given a 
value before the test). Unfortunately, not all compilers are so 
accommodating.

Well, it's true that I don't know C99 as well as I perhaps should, but 
are you claiming that C99 /requires/ a diagnostic message for the above 
code?

Alas, some users do still use compilers that can't help you even if you 
don't. I recognise that mine is a minority viewpoint, but I have found 
that the guarantee of deterministic behaviour is a useful one that has 
saved me much head-scratching.
