Have a look at the source code for Tiny C, which is much simpler than
gcc. (www.tinycc.org)

I've looked through it searching for references to "call" (the call
instruction for x86 target). I found these (not in the same place):

ALT(DEF_ASM_OP1(call, 0xff, 2, OPC_MODRM, OPT_INDIR))
ALT(DEF_ASM_OP1(call, 0xe8, 0, OPC_JMP, OPT_ADDR))
DEF_ASM(call)
OP(CALL, "call", 0x28)

(I suspect the last isn't for x86.)

Even here, they are buried inside macros. The exact code for 'call',
including pass arguments and picking up the return value, depends on
target processor and calling convention, as well as the type of the result.

You're welcome to try and find where it's used! Other people's code is
always going to have this problem, it's not peculiar to compilers.

(In my non-C compiler, the call to atoi() is rather special as it calls
to C are viewed as foreign functions and need different treatment. But
the code involved is for /any/ C function not just atoi.

There is nothing special about atoi() itself; it's just another
function. Although being part of the standard library, it may be
sometimes be handled differently.)
