A little research shows that this is a /requirement/ of the x86-64 ABI. Amongst other things, gcc also uses it for debugging and cleanup attributes (a gcc extension allowing a sort of destructor call in C). On targets that don't have such ABI requirements - such as the ARM that I am using - there are no exception tables or other C++ related overhead, other than a few instructions from the library startup code.
