The question I was asking was "How long would it take to write similar 
code in assembler?", not how fast the assembler code would run.

SQLite is a good database.

And 1.2 seconds to do that summary is fine for me.  I seriously doubt it 
would be any faster with PostgreSQL or MySQL or Oracle.
