gdb might help you; it can print the values also the types, eg:
(gdb) print pointer
$1 = (int *) 0xf7e363fd <__cxa_atexit+29>
(gdb) print &pointer
$2 = (int **) 0xffffce2c
(gdb) print buffer
$3 = {13238272, 1, 134513309, -12083, 47, 134518472, 134513810, 1, -12572,
-12564}
(gdb) print &buffer
$4 = (int (*)[10]) 0xffffce04
(gdb) ptype pointer
type = int *
(gdb) ptype &pointer
type = int **
(gdb) ptype buffer
type = int [10]
(gdb) ptype &buffer
type = int (*)[10]
(gdb) ptype *buffer
type = int
