I've looked at some of it. The documentation is poor. It thinks people have an interest in LLVM and the rest, or building from scratch; they haven't! They just want another C compiler to install for Windows as an alternative to the rest, and one that is ready to use. But clang as provided isn't that. Fine, but they haven't bothered to point that out anywhere, leaving it to users to waste time finding these things out for themselves. I think it took me a couple of years to find out, as it was silently piggy-backing itself onto my mingw installation! So clang as provided doesn't have any standard headers. It has no libraries, and apparently it has no linker of its own. Yet clang.exe is a 49MB executable! The whole download is over 400MB. > Several mailing lists and other forums are mentioned in > the left column. I don't know, > and am not able to find out, whether installing those will give > you a working Clang system. But why should anyone bother if they are not willing to make the effort? Google 'Pelles C'. Click on the first link that should be smorgasbordet. That's its homepage: "complete development kit for Windows". Click Downloads. The first link here is for the 64-bit version, the second for 32-bit. Click to download and run the installer. Everything is provided to compile C programs into object files and to link those into executables. THAT is how it's done. You seem to think that it is some failing on my part that I don't want to jump through some ridiculous hoops, including ones I don't even know about, which it is again my fault for not investigating what they are! > [...] > >> OK, so 'gcc' is a very blunt term that can be used to mean almost >> anything. > > No, it isn't. *You* insist on using the term incorrectly. Most of the > rest of us don't have any problem understanding that it's a compiler > collection, not a full C implementation. I don't believe that anyone talking about 'gcc' is mainly using it that very narrow sense. Here's someone else asking questions: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/32239122/what-do-you-need-to-install-to-use-clang-on-windows-to-build-c14-for-64-bit And they also talk about gcc: "Which seems to indicate that clang is not seeing gcc's files. It seems that some versions of LLVM/clang are looking for only certain versions of gcc, but that doesn't seem to be documented anywhere?" I doubt anyone was confused about what they meant. -- Bartc -- Bartc
