So, by now, as far as I am concerned, the only advantage > clang holds over gcc is clearer error diagnostics. Since clang started to become popular, and people realised that clang generates good code with faster compilation and better diagnostics, the gcc team took the comparison as a challenge and an inspiration. In recent versions, gcc has got somewhat faster (especially where it /really/ matters, such as compilation of massive C++ projects with link-time optimisation), and much better and clearer diagnostics (again, especially obvious for C++ where diagnostics could easily be unintelligible). On the other side, as clang has adopted more and more optimisations, it has generated faster code but taken longer to do so. And the two projects have cooperated on new ideas and features, especially for the "sanitize" debugging aids. They also cooperate to keep new implementation-specific features (such as new "attributes") compatible between the two compilers. The mixture between cooperation and competition has been good for both projects, and good for users. > > Also some people can prefer clang license over gcc's either for > pragmatic or for ideological reasons.
