Looking up elt, I came across this comment in a forum: "There are an absurd number of accessors for arrays and sequences: I find it almost impossible to know which to use." I now about ETH, NTH, AREF, CHAR, SCHAR; who knows how many more there are. And there appear to be dedicated accessors for special kinds of lists and arrays and vectors (eg. BIT and SBIT). This is not an elegant design. Most 'normal' languages use one kind of accessor, such as []. (I use a[i] to randomly access or set any kind of indexable list, string, homogeneous array, bit array, ... I sometimes use a.[i] to access things normally considered compound objects: strings (as chars rather than substrings), records/structs, ints (extracting bits)... Just two types of access. Use a[i..j] instead and you get a slice. A small number of concepts that can be used everywhere. Not the most elegant language but in this regard it is far ahead of Lisp.) -- Bartc
