Don't get me wrong. I *love* the *concept* of the OSM maps. 

I really do.

OSM maps work fine for road driving. The inaccuracies aren't all that bad, 
and they can be updated by users. So, for street use, OSM is fine.

Even for trail use, OSM maps are fine if you stay on the trail.

But if you are always hiking off trail in rugged terrain (think two 
thousand or more feet change in elevation in a single hike), then the OSM 
maps are horrendously inaccurate.

So, for most people, OSM maps are fine. 
And for road driving, OSM maps are fine.
They just suck for off-trail use where there is a cliff on one side and a 
ravine on the other and a mistake makes a difference because of the rule of 
ravine (which is once you start into a ravine, you're in it until it meets 
a lake or ocean which is miles from where you started).

On the roads, OSM is fine.
But off trail, in the USA, for free, offline, nothing beats the free USGS 
topographic maps.

I use GPS *all the time* when hiking. 
I put the device in airplane mode so that the authorities can't track me, 
and I just use the GPS to figure out where I am.

PS: I run into illegal stuff all the time so I don't want to be tracked.
