Teach them BASIC with GOTOs so that they begin to understand what the computer is really capable of at a time when their thinking is at an elemental line by line level. Then, with those elements under their belts, and they can think further about organising more than one line of code, then introduce subroutines, structures, functions, so leading onto objects and thus whole systems. With the military analogy once again, 2nd lieutenants, ensigns and midshipmen are not given the task of planning whole campaigns until such times as they have experience of the things that are being managed.
