Charles Childers built retro Forth in a similar manner, generating code
for a virtual Forth CPU, once you build a virtual machine for a
particular CPU then the generated Forth Virtual Code will work on any of
them. He has virtual machines for a variety of CPUs available. A virtual
machine is simple compared to the development system so moving to a new
CPU is much easier.
