Converting back and forth between binary and decimal was slow too - enough so that it was standard practice to use decimal for numeric data fields and binary for subscripts. Even though binary arithmetic was faster, if you were doing a lot of simple calculations you'd lose the speed advantage several times over if you converted input data from decimal to binary for calculations and back to decimal for output. The other problem was even if you were determined to do your calculations in binary, many machines didn't support long enough binary fields to hold your numbers.
