I'm not a farmer, but I have been told that seeding a farm with a gps
controlled seeded has numerous advantages, enough to invest in the
technology.

I asked chatgpt.

Q: what advantages has for a farmer seeding a farm with a GPS (and
computer) controlled machine? Or rather have GPS and computer controlled
machines for all or most operations?

Using GPS- and computer-controlled machinery in farming can provide
major advantages in productivity, profitability, precision, and
environmental sustainability. The benefits become even greater when GPS
guidance and computer control are used across most or all farm
operations, rather than only during seeding.

This approach is generally called precision agriculture or precision
farming.

The fundamental idea is simple: instead of treating an entire field as
if every square metre were identical, the farmer uses positioning,
sensors, maps, and computer-controlled machinery to manage the field
much more accurately.

## 1. Advantages when seeding with GPS and computer control

Efficiency - Agronomy Magazine

Add precision to starter fertilizer use

Even using GPS-controlled machinery for seeding alone can make a
substantial difference.

- No overlaps: The tractor follows precisely defined paths, avoiding
seeding the same strip twice.
- No missed strips: Reduces gaps between planting passes.
- Accurate row spacing: Maintains consistent distances between rows.
- Precise seed placement: Computer-controlled planters can regulate seed
spacing and planting depth.
- Variable seeding rates: Different parts of a field can receive
different quantities of seed according to soil quality and productivity.
- Night-time operation: GPS guidance allows accurate planting even in
darkness, when visual guidance is difficult.
- Less operator fatigue: The driver does not have to constantly
concentrate on keeping perfectly straight rows.
- Reduced fuel consumption: Fewer unnecessary passes and overlaps mean
less fuel is used.

An important advantage is that the same GPS guidance lines can be reused
for subsequent operations.

## 2. Advantages when GPS and computer control are used for most farm
operations

Five questions about digital farming

This is where the benefits become particularly interesting.

Imagine that the tractor uses the same GPS reference lines for seeding,
fertilizing, spraying, cultivating and harvesting.

The different machines then work in a coordinated system.

### A. Better use of land

- More consistent spacing between rows.
- Less land wasted through overlaps and irregular passes.
- Better use of headlands and field boundaries.
- More efficient movement of machinery.

### B. Reduced costs

| Operation | Potential benefit |
| --- | --- |
| Seeding | Less wasted seed |
| Fertilizing | Less fertilizer overlap |
| Spraying | Less chemical overlap |
| Cultivation | Fewer unnecessary passes |
| Harvesting | Reduced missed areas |
| Transport | More efficient field logistics |

There can also be savings in labour, fuel, machinery wear and maintenance.

### C. Better soil protection

One particularly interesting advantage is controlled traffic farming.

[farminguk.com](<https://www.farminguk.com/news/cambs-farmer-to-showcase-controlled-traffic-farming-method_54849.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com>)

The idea is to make all machinery use the same permanent wheel tracks.

For example:

- The seeder follows the same tracks as the sprayer.
- The fertilizer spreader follows those tracks.
- The combine harvester follows them too, where machinery widths permit.

This means that machinery repeatedly compresses the same relatively
small portions of the field instead of compacting new soil everywhere.

The advantages include:

- Less soil compaction.
- Better soil structure in the growing areas.
- Improved water infiltration.
- Better root development.
- Potentially improved crop yields.

This can be one of the most valuable long-term benefits.

### D. More accurate fertilizer and pesticide application

With GPS, computer control and suitable sensors, machinery can apply
inputs according to the actual needs of different areas.

For example:

- More fertilizer where soil nutrient levels or yield potential justify it.
- Less fertilizer where the soil is already sufficiently fertile.
- Spraying only where weeds or diseases are detected, when suitable
technology is available.
- Adjusting application rates while the machine is moving.

This can reduce input costs and environmental impact.

### E. Improved irrigation management

GPS, soil-moisture sensors and computer-controlled irrigation can help
farmers:

- Apply different quantities of water to different areas.
- Avoid overwatering.
- Identify areas suffering from water stress.
- Automate irrigation according to soil moisture and weather conditions.

This is particularly important in Mediterranean agriculture, where water
availability can be a major constraint.

### F. Better information about the farm

[nyfarminsurance.com](<https://nyfarminsurance.com/post/farm-equipment-insurance-carriers/?utm_source=chatgpt.com>)

An integrated system can create a digital record of practically
everything that happens in each field.

For example:

- Where and when seeds were planted.
- How much seed was used.
- How much fertilizer was applied.
- Which areas were sprayed.
- How much water was used.
- How much crop was harvested in each location.

The combine harvester can produce yield maps showing which parts of a
field are productive and which are not.

Over several years, the farmer builds up a valuable database that helps
make better decisions.

## 3. The economic advantages: an illustrative example

Consider a farmer cultivating 100 hectares of arable land.

Suppose GPS guidance and computer-controlled machinery produce the
following hypothetical annual savings:

| Source of savings | Example annual saving |
| --- | --- |
| Seed | €500 |
| Fertilizer | €1,500 |
| Pesticides | €600 |
| Diesel | €800 |
| Labour | €1,000 |
| Total | €4,400 |

Illustrative figures only, not measured averages or a forecast.

There could also be additional income from improved crop yields, better
planting accuracy and reduced soil compaction.

However, these savings must be compared with:

- Initial equipment investment.
- GPS correction subscriptions (if required).
- Software licences.
- Repairs and maintenance.
- Training and technical support.

The economic benefit depends heavily on farm size, crop type, machinery
utilisation and existing farming practices.

## 4. What are the disadvantages?

There are some important considerations.

1. Investment cost: Modern GPS receivers, controllers, sensors and
compatible implements can be expensive.
2. Technical dependence: If the computer, GPS receiver or communication
system fails, operations may be interrupted.
3. Compatibility: Different manufacturers do not always use fully
compatible systems.
4. Training: The farmer needs to understand the equipment and interpret
the collected data.
5. Maintenance: Electronic systems require software updates, calibration
and repairs.
6. Data dependence: Poor soil maps or incorrect prescriptions can lead
to poor decisions, even with excellent machinery.

One important point: GPS guidance alone does not automatically improve
crop yields. The greatest benefits come when accurate positioning is
combined with good agronomic information and appropriate machine control.

## 5. What would an ideal GPS-controlled farm look like?

Here is an example of how I would envisage an integrated system:

Sveaverken F200 – Agricultura de precisión simplificada

Cropline | Swedish Agro

John Deere G5 Command Center-display | Cumela

| Farm operation | Computer/GPS function |
| --- | --- |
| Soil preparation | Automatic guidance and controlled working depth |
| Seeding | Precise seed spacing, depth and variable seeding rate |
| Fertilizing | Automatic variable-rate application |
| Spraying | GPS-guided spraying and automatic section control |
| Irrigation | Sensor-based automatic water application |
| Cultivation | Precise row guidance and working depth |
| Harvesting | GPS guidance and yield mapping |
| Transport | Optimized routes and machinery coordination |

Ideally, all machinery would share the same digital field maps,
reference lines and operating records.

The farmer could supervise the entire operation from a computer in the
farm office, or even from a tablet.

## 6. My overall assessment

I would distinguish between three levels of technological development:

Level 1GPS-assisted machinery

GPS guidance and automatic steering for tractors and other machinery.

The principal benefits are less overlap, less operator fatigue and more
efficient operations.

Level 2Integrated precision farming

All major machines share GPS maps, field data and computer-controlled
application systems.

This is where the benefits become much greater because operations work
together.

Level 3Highly automated farming

Autonomous tractors, robotic machinery, sensors, drones and automated
decision-support systems.

The farmer increasingly becomes a supervisor and manager rather than the
person directly operating every machine.

My recommendation: I would favour Level 2 as the practical target for
most commercial farms. It offers many of the advantages of modern
technology without necessarily requiring a fully autonomous farm.

There is also an important strategic advantage: once the farm has
accurate GPS field maps and a common digital infrastructure, it becomes
much easier to introduce more automation later.

For further reading:

- [GPS.gov – Farming with
GPS](<https://www.gps.gov/farming-gps?utm_source=chatgpt.com>).

Agriculture](<https://www.ars.usda.gov/oc/utm/benefits-and-evolution-of-precision-agriculture/?utm_source=chatgpt.com>).
- [European Environment Agency – Precision
Agriculture](<https://climate-adapt.eea.europa.eu/es/metadata/adaptation-options/precision-agriculture?utm_source=chatgpt.com>).

One particularly interesting question is whether this technology could
make a farm significantly more profitable even without increasing its
cultivated area. In many cases, that is precisely where its greatest
long-term value lies.
