And sometimes not. I agree with Morten that it's good to understand what's going on at least one layer down from where you normally work. It can help you find solutions to problems that might otherwise leave you stuck (or in worst cases, dead) if there are no experts around to help you. (Mind you, said experts think our increasingly co-dependent society is a Good Thing because it makes it easier for them to justify their own existence.) This is why flying training still includes things like the basics of how an engine works - it's knowledge that will help you figure out how to do what's necessary to keep that engine running (a _very_ good thing in an aircraft) - as well as how not to do things that might make it stop running. I read an article suggesting that the area of the brain that deals with spatial relationships is atrophying in many people, due to their increasing dependence on GPS. Of course, some people have always been unable to follow a set of directions to get somewhere half a dozen blocks away, but their numbers are increasing. What I worry about is that we are creating a race of people who are so dependent on technology that they are incapable of performing the slightest thing on their own. As for me, if I get a flat tire I'll change it and be on my way, rather than waiting 45 minutes for someone from the automobile association to come along and do it for me. And I like being able to solve small problems with mental arithmetic in less time than it would take to find a calculator and figure out where all the keys are. I enjoy the puzzled look on young cashiers' faces when I hand them an amount of money that makes the change work out even. They have no idea how I could be so quick and accurate - I suspect some of them think I just luckily happened to pull the right coins out of my pocket.
