Book number one of a one book apocalyptic series. There might be more in the series in the coming years but I am not going to hold
my breath. The author states that he is still promoting the first book and will start the second book soon. If so, I will buy and
read the sequel(s). The book is a POD (print on demand) trade paperback.
The apocalyptic event is a 20 megaton nuclear blast above the USA causing a massive EMP from coast to coast. The author believes
that the EMP will cause all cars and trucks to fail due to their EMS (engine management systems) computer being fried. I disagree
with this concept as a car or a truck on rubber tires is a large Faraday cage. The EMS is a hardened computer system running in a
horrible environment. Just the act of jump starting a vehicle would kill most of these systems if they were not well protected.
That said, having all the modern cars and trucks dead certainly intensifies the beginning of the tragedy. Our protagonists are over
200 miles away from home and use a combination of legs, bicycles, old trucks, and four wheelers to get going home.
BTW, there are frequent mentions of Christianity in the book via prayers and such. At least once per chapter and sometimes several
times per chapter. I have an acquaintance who is an atheist who was offended by the amount of prayers in the book. I am a Christian
so I appreciate the amount but others might not.
Also, the book is written in second person perspective. At first, I disliked that perspective but, it grew on me and I got
comfortable with it after a while.
One common theme in the apocalypse books that I have been reading is how quickly things go bad. I guess that is an expansion of the
old saying, "any society is three meals away from anarchy". I am wondering how many bad actors are being kept in place by the rule
of law. And prisons.
