it was from a course long ago, that showed the reflectivity of the 
surface depended upon induced surface currents, just one surface.

but a there are 3 parts, transmissivity, reflectivity, and absorptivity, 
and the metals do not absorb much so it gets reflected, non metals 
absorb more, the 1/4 oxide layers have good transmission.

the dielectric coatings are very interesting, I have a book "Optical 
Thin Films, Users Handbook" by James D Rancourt where multiple coatings 
are put on in near 1/4 wavelength, typically in stacks of alternating 
index (different materials ) but it is more on the optical interference 
filters that bandpass light through in a band. If the band is narrow, it 
reflects most all the light and looks very silver, like a mirror, on the 
back side, but a small notch is missing where the light was transmitted 
through the filter. Some of those filters have 10 layers..
