Earliest drives I used where IBM 729s
able to read/write 200, 556, and 800 CPI.

I never saw any tape at anything other than 800 CPI.

The iron filing technique would have a resolution problem.

My second job was a 1440 with disks.
I was hooked on disk systems after that.
