The most dangerous things with hardlinked directories: You can build a loop. A circular reference, ending in an endless loop when traversing directories. And you break the most fundamental rule in file systems: Any subdirectory has *one* parent directory, and *only* *one* When you hardlink directories this is suddenly no longer true, there exist more than 1 parent. So where should the filesystem go to when accessing a parent? There is *no* way to decide which parent is the real one. The meaning of ".." is suddenly lost. File system tools traversing the directories suddenly would need to keep track of stuff they never needed before, such as iNodes to know what the true reference of a directory is to distinguish them from other ones. Those additional things are not part of the standard unix tools, and apple did *not* build them into the CLI tools on Macs. So in reality those tools are unaware of the real state of directories. And naturally is the user also unaware, he has no way to see which one is the "real" directory There are more things, users can loose all the data residing in hardlinked dirs when using them wrong (and especially mac users will do wrong things as they are technically completely incompetent), as they are not aware of that hardlink status. A hardlink is the real thing. With files you get at least a indication that it is hardlinked, the number after the file access rights is telling the number of hardlinks when doing an "ls -l" on a console. With directories you get the number of entries, which is not true when the directory itself is hardlinked. So OSX is doing it not only dangerous, but also outright wrong. But the worst thing of it all is that implementing hardlinks for directories is not only dangerous and against unix specs, it is also not needed. You can achieve the same effect in other ways So now, come on: Prove again that you are an incompetent cretin. You are a mac user, so that is rewally your default status. You have only proven so far that you are completely unable to reach "incompetent dimbulb" status
