Then how does the elephant, who has lived for a half-billion heartbeats, 
know to die in another half-billion heartbeats?

How does a magnetized needle know that it was ever in the presence of 
the magnet that aligned its magnetic domains?

You have some pithy philosophies, Peter, but they don't jive with facts.
