I've been running my own SMTP servers on Linux since the 90's without a single successful break-in. Not that my personal server is a large or particularly interesting target, but most of the break-ins I've heard about are due to idiotic passwords, procedures, and people. Those are far easier to exploit than most of the software vulnerabilities.
