I was watching a video about the development of suspension springs in cars.

'Leaf spring' sprang out at me as something more at home in a program
about the seasons - an idyllic countryside with the new shoots of  leaves.

The odd thing is - the term is common to both by American  and  British
automotive terms, unlike others e.g. bonnet (hood), boot (trunk), petrol
(gas), etc

I understand the 'spring' bit, but the 'leaf' part is a little less
obvious.
