I thought only HD channels are encrypted, None of the freesat channels are encrypted, the tvheadend software that I mentioned just filters the various PIDs (audio/video/subtitles/etc) and records them as an MPEG transport stream, that's what VLC plays, you could transcode it to any format you like, there's no lock-in.
