The snow on the clear winter night is likely cooling, and the Greenland ice under its cloud cover is warming (and some of it is melting, but it's miles thick, so it will take a while before the dark earth below it is exposed -- which will radiate a similar spectrum at the same temperature, by the way, though more strongly due to its lower albedo). > According to you, snow is constantly getting colder, even if the > atmosphere above it is warmer than the snow! Clouds have tiny water droplets in them, which means a ray up through a cloud hits millions of air/water interfaces, which refract and reflect much incident radiation. Clouds thus scatter radiation. The effect is stronger at shorter wavelengths, particularly visible light, but IR will be scattered too, and a lot of it will be stuck bouncing around underneath and inside the cloud. Clouds at night thus cause a greenhouse effect, though by day they reflect away much of the incident sunlight, thus blocking the main source of daytime heating and making for cooler weather. It will not melt. It will not run away.
