depends upon the field.

in finance, mostly it is junk, you can get a good set of personal 
planning stuff for about 500 new, and the info lasts long time. (200 used)

in engineering, books about 3 to 5 years behind, companies keep the 
state of the art stuff inside. Although some books are ahead of 
technology, one I am thinking of is mostly math, so you have to be able 
to bridge over from math to engineering and implement.

in physics, Dover has a great set of physics equations  that last 
forever, and at a civilian book store in physics there are 90% junky stuff,

I have Newtons books, they are excellent !

internet information is poor, shallow, and you have to pay for the good 
articals, but usally they are not implementable, just a patch on 
something.

But the do have patents on line
