I suspect the answer is that the triac-type dimmers used in houses
(which operate by chopping AC to reduce the total power available)
aren't compatible with the physics of how LEDs or CFLs work. The
incandescent bulb is a quintessentially analog device, if you throttle
the power it will dim in proportion. Your sewing machine probably
actually switches how many LEDs are powered. We need a solution that
doesn't require rewiring houses.

Maybe that could be done with room lights by having the switching
controlled in the LED bulb by RMS(?) voltage. (CFLs are a more
intransigent case.) But AFAIK nobody produces those bulbs yet.
