The incandescent bulb is a quintessentially analog device, if you throttle the power it will dim in proportion. Your sewing machine probably actually switches how many LEDs are powered. We need a solution that doesn't require rewiring houses. Maybe that could be done with room lights by having the switching controlled in the LED bulb by RMS(?) voltage. (CFLs are a more intransigent case.) But AFAIK nobody produces those bulbs yet.
