  I got a big laugh out of the Surface add where they boast about the USB
  port, showing someone carrying one with a big blue *dongle* <laughing>
  hanging off of it, like it was exposing itself.

There's nothing funnier that a "big blue *dongle* <laughing>" that's 
"exposing itself" in a television commercial for a laptop computer.

It doesn't get any weirder than this.

There's a difference in distributing an update that has to work on many 
100's of millions of consumer machines and a Debian update to a small number 
of geeks. If one particular update causes problems/breaks something then 
it's easy to undo and uninstall one specific update. With aptitude, not 
exactly easy to do.

"Works for me" doesn't cut it. What happens to work on one machine doesn't 
mean it'll work on many 100's of millions of machines without a need to undo 
an update.

The time an update takes isn't all that interesting. This multi-tasking 
thing actually works making it a moot point. I do think that Windows updates 
should be faster but it's pretty far down my wish-list.
