true,  the old tube radios (20-60's) had higher current multi winding 
transformers which are impossable to replace, aka filiment winding of 20 
amps at 2.5 volts...

also good heat sinking the regulators is key

yep.

also some can add noise to a nice quiet audio amp, even if switching 
frequency high.
