I'm not sure exactly how it worked. I believe that RPM was one criterion, but not the only one. The drive would normally wait for something like 30 seconds before trying to load the heads, even though it only took a few seconds for the pack to spin up to speed. There was probably a timer to ensure that airflow and temperatures had stabilized around the pack. As for the heads loading, I'm guessing that the congealed oil made the heads move so sluggishly that a velocity sensor signaled a fault.
