All of which ignores the reality that many (Most? I'm certain not ALL, 
though) .44 Mags of that era were 5 round revolvers. Without going to 
the effort of digging it up, I'm not sure whether the Colt Python 
(Which, unless I mis-remember, was Dirty Harry's weapon) was a 5 or 6 
round model at the time the movie was made. Limitations of the 
metallurgy back then pretty much clobbered the idea a 6 shot .44 Mag (or 
.357 Mag) since the hotter loads in the "Magnum" series required more 
metal in the cylinder, which, of course, meant more weight, which in 
turn meant more "oomph" to lug it around, which, in practical terms, 
pretty much boiled down to "Nifty toy, but since I'm the one that's 
gonna have to drag it around all day, unless you make it mandatory, I'm 
just gonna stick with my good ol' .38 special, thanks" for most people, 
cops or not. Dropping that "extra" round meant that critical ounces of 
weight could be shaved off the gun without reducing the cylinder wall 
thickness to the point where it would be dangerous to fire, making it 
more acceptable to the buying public. 

Nowdays, titanium alloys and other metallurgical improvements make it 
possible - even trivial - to build .44 or .357 Mag revolvers that hold 
6, or in one case I'm aware of (probably more that I don't know about 
for sure), 7 rounds with the same - or even less - weight as their 
earlier 5-shot counterparts. And most critically, be able to fire them 
without the worry of having the cylinder suddenly turn into a shrapnel 
grenade without notice.
