Many years ago, I used to write Fortran programs on OS/360 systems.

If I wanted a carriage return to print, or otherwise output,
I could put on in a character constant. It might look funny,
but the compiler wasn't bothered at all.

The input to the Fortran compiler is fixed length 80 byte records,
usually blocked with a block length like 3200. No character is
reserved for line ending.

The PL/I (F) compiler likes variable length records, but again
any length is allowed. There is a standard OS/360 file format
called VB, that is, variable length blocked records. Each record
has a four byte header, such records are put together into a block,
and the block has a four byte header.

The tranditional way to write a line end in java is with

System.out.println();

You can put something to print, which will then be followed by a 
line ending specific to that system.

But I don't know if there is Java for OS/360.
