No, always use binary, nonblocking ( and no buffering if you can ) in 
terms of the entry points exposed by of file.h

Yes, even for simple filters. And ESPECIALLY for tty devices
unless somebody's forcing you to use control signals in a
certain kind of way. In that case, protest loudly.

This too. Although I'd rather write a state machine to split lines
than depend on the marshalling/unmarshalling of the standard library.
