He's right. What he's referring to is not what you see or hear from some 
distance away but what is happening in the explosive material. It's 
called a detonation profile and basically is the time profile over the 
period when the explosive material is detonating. Once the detonation 
profile is over, there are lots of things that follow, like a fireball 
rising, shock waves spreading. But all of those are AFTER the detonation 
profile.
