Probably because of all the bad press they've received in the past, I've never really considered BlackBerry as an alternative... in fact <blush> it recently came as a surprise to me that they are still actually in the game. Anyway, having used a "smartphone" for a while, I've been halfheartedly looking around for a new phone. I'm using a Motorola Droid RAZR-M, and thinking that after some experience with it, I don't much like Android, and I really don't like the way Verizon works so hard to make sure their customers are using the latest version that they approve of, distributes updates that break existing apps, and so forth. So in looking around I find a couple of candidates for "decent phone with physical keyboard" and I see that LG and BlackBerry are still in that game. The BlackBery Passport seems like it could possibly be a reasonable choice, but they use their own OS. I'm thinking that might not be a bad thing, if their OS works and is stable. On the other hand, BlackBerry seems to be offering phones with touch keyboards now (for all I know they always have) so maybe there's a chance of their letting physical keyboards become a relic of the past, who can tell what they'll decide to do in order to survive? Maybe some of you actually have BlackBerry devices and maybe you have some thoughts on the subject. Is their OS solid and stable? I consider the linux kernel to be solid and stable, but Google keeps spinning out new versions of Android, and just like Microsoft has traditionally done with Windows, new versions of Android mess around with the user- interface. I for one don't like it when I've just gotten used to the idiosyncracies of one version, and a new batch of stuff is dumped on me. Since BlackBerry uses their own OS, how much of an issue is version- thrashing with BlackBerry? -- http://totally-portable-software.blogspot.com
