Random associations flashed across the internal screen --
Blish's explanation of the spindizzy equation, etc.
(Uh, oh! And the story about the Dirac transmitter; you can
get lost in these kinds of mazes, so I'll stop that one there).

But my mind's eye settled for more than 1 msec on an old short
story which I'll probably get all wrong because I'm gettin ol
and keep writing "to" for "too" and "two" like I notice some people do
because it's a sign your over 50 and can't tell the diff between
you, your and you're and dont give a shit about spleen generallment.

Anyway. The story:

I guy is accosted by a weirdo in a park one night. Turns out
the weirdo is a time traveller trying to find the person responsible
for the destruction of civilization.
The guy says it's not him but the traveller explains the collapse
was traced [12-monkeys style; the Bruce v1 did it better -- that series
my intelligent sat TV hunted up is crap; sorry] to someone that
came up with an equation I = \pi i exp(\mu) .
It seemed the proving or disproving of the theory behind the formula
resulted in numerous titatic explosions and a lot of ill-feeling all round.
In the future.
The guy claims he doesn't know anything about it, is not a scientist
and to shove off.
After a moments thought the traveller disappears in a puff of light.
"Well I'll be a pie-eyed emu" the guy exclaims. "What a wierdo!"

[The UAH LT series:]
Previously reported discrepancies between the amount of warming near the
surface and higher in the atmosphere have been used to challenge the
reliability of climate models and the reality of human-induced global warming
... This significant discrepancy no longer exists because errors in the
satellite and radiosonde data have been identified and corrected. New data
sets have also been developed that do not show such discrepancies.
