But why *force* the compiler to use what you say is the "natural" order? 
Perhaps it has just calculated c in the previous statement:

     c = some_function();
     d = a + b + c;

Why force the compiler to ignore the fact that is already holds the value of 
c in a register, and prevent it optimizing it to:

     d = (c + a) + b;

Or, let's take you "natural order" one step further:

     a + b + c + d ==>  ( ( a + b ) + c ) + d

Why not let a "hyperthreading" CPU do:

     ( a + b ) + ( c + d )

where (a+b) and (c+d) are calculated in parallel?

Why encumber the compiler, preventing such optimizations?

In other words, "the order is unspecified"?
