stdin and stdout

Are there any ways to get these two values, other than making use of the 
built-in variables (or macros or whatever they are) 'stdin' and 'stdout'?

I want, for example, to use the C file functions in a dynamic library 
such as MSVCRT.DLL. That library might not be the same one linked in to 
the executable, so the stdin/out values available within the executable 
might not be compatible.

Looking at a few implementations, stdin/stdout are defined as elements 
of a FILE array called "iob" but the exact name seems to be vary.

I thought there might be a function that returned the values or a 
pointer to them.
