I just had one of the most bizarre things happen that I've ever had
happen in the entire time I've been working with Access (~19 years). I
am puzzled as to what's going on.

I was just working on a database, on one form in particular, and some
global subroutines, for about 2 1/2 hours. During that time, I opened,
closed, saved the form, and even backed up the database using File |
Save and Publish | Backup Database. I use that backup method frequently
while I'm working, and all the backups go into a separate Backup folder.
While working on this database for 2 1/2 hours, I must've backed up at
least 5-10 times. I also frequently saved my work by pressing Ctrl+S, or
by clicking OK when I close a form and Access asks if I want to save it.
(I press Ctrl+S so much while I'm working, I must've pressed it at least
100 times during this 2 1/2 hour period.)

Also, I have a separate backup routine that runs every 6 hours and
copies my work onto my external hard drive. This routine ran when I was
about an hour into my work.

So, I finished the work, closed out of the database (again, saving
everything) and took a break. I came back about 15 minutes later, and
all my work was gone!!!! The state of the form I had been working on was
the same state it was in after about the first 10 minutes of work
tonight. Everything after that is gone. Just gone.

And I checked my Backup folder. There are no backups there from 7/20.
The most recent backup was from 7/18! I know I did backups, and I got no
error message when I did each one. But there are no backups from the 2
1/2 hours I was working, though I know I did at least 5-10 backups.

So I have no idea what's going on. How could I have saved my work time
after time after time, and done backups, and have them simply not be
there??? This makes absolutely no sense to me.

I checked my backup copies to see if perhaps I was working on the wrong
version, perhaps the version on my backup drive. But that one is also
from the 18th. I also searched my C drive, to see if there was a stray
copy of the file somewhere that I might've been accidentally working on,
but didn't find anything.

One thing that was bizarre when I searched my C drive is that shortcuts
to the file (in the Recent) folder show up in the File Manager search
with the Access icon next to it. But the files themselves (the database
file and the backup files with the date in the filename) show up with
the INTERNET EXPLORER icon next to it!!

If I click on one of the backup copies of the database with the IE icon
next to it, it opens fine.

But there are also about 6 copies of the actual database itself that
have the IE icon next to it. When I click on one of those, the group of
six all get selected. If I right-click and select properties, it shows
the path and the filename as "file:///C:/Projects/mydb.accdb" (mydb
isn't the actual name). When I double-click on it, the database opens
fine (though the first time I did it it gave me the message, "This file
could not be downloaded," and then opened the database).

How did my database get associated with Internet Explorer??? (And note:
in the folder itself, it still shows Access 2010 as the associated
program. But in the Search results, it's showing Internet Explorer as
the associated program.)

After rebooting the computer and rerunning a search, it then correctly
showed Access 2010 as the associated program.

So I have to wonder: was my system somehow erroneously saving my changes
to the Internet (perhaps my OneDrive account), instead of to my hard
drive? Sounds really bizarre, but it's the only thing that makes sense,
especially given the Internet Explorer file association in the search
results.

While I did close and reopen the database several times (when I did
backups from within Access); and each time I reopened the database and
the form my changes were still there; I never closed Access itself. It
was only after I closed Access that I lost all my changes.

So I wonder if Access was storing all the changes in memory, or perhaps,
somehow, in some Internet copy of my database, which it then lost when I
closed Access? Sounds really bizarre, but it's the only thing that makes
sense here. (Still can't explain why when I did backups from within
Access those weren't written to the hard drive, especially since the
correct folder appeared when did the Backup Database command.)

This is truly, truly bizarre. Anyone have any ideas as to what's going
on and/or if there's any way to find the file I was working on?? :-((

Thanks!
