There was a short scifi story I read as a kid (Asimov?) where a scientist built a computer to solve the problem of the universe's ultimate demise. As entropy increased, the computer became smarter and over the years and eons, rebuilt itself many times. Finally it existed only in hyperspace and it watched as the final stars winked out. After an immeasurable time and with no humans nor any living things around, it finally devised a solution..
