I think one of the things that's surprising to me about you being a 
retired engineer is the fact that you are willing to disconnect physics 
from real-life observation. I thought for sure that an engineer would be 
extremely tuned into checking hypotheses against real-life scenarios and 
discarding ideas that simply don't work in application.

In the matter of how you conceive a photon, you seem to be perfectly 
willing to just explore it at the conceptual level, the logical level. 
You're asking whether it makes LOGICAL sense or CONCEPTUAL sense to 
consider a photon to be one complete cycle of the oscillation. (Of 
course it makes logical and conceptual sense.) But you didn't ask 
whether it makes sense against things you can actually observe in real 
life. Which is why I brought up the cheap oscilloscope and how you can 
tell RIGHT AWAY in a practical application that a photon can't be a 
single complete cycle of oscillation.

If anything, I would expect you as a trained engineer to ask yourself 
with every hypothesis you dream up, "Well, if that were true, then how 
could I check to see if that makes sense with something I can rig up out 
of scrapyard parts?"
