I guess the part that eludes me is how these root certificates *get* on
my system.

Did "I" put the "root certificates" there? (somehow?)
Did the operating system ISO put them there? 
Did the browser installation pout them there?

How would I find them on my system?
And, how do I make sure nobody messes with them without me knowing it?
